BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, in Latin. Liturgia, seu liber precum communium, et administrationis sacramentorum .... London: Roger Norton for Samuel Mearne, 1670. 8° (175 x 107mm). Double column, ruled in red throughout. With front blank. (Title slightly thumb-soiled, G5-8 browned, minor ink stain on M7v and M8r.) CONTEMPORARY GILT-TOOLED BLACK TURKEY probably by the Queens' Binder A (William Nott?), the sides with a star in circle roll enclosing an all-over pattern of 'drawer-handles' forming compartments filled by pointillé flowers and volutes, the latter highlighted in silver paint against a background of large and small dots, the spine in six panels each tooled with a rosette, roll-tool repeated on spine bands, board edges and at inner dentelles, gilt edges (corners slightly bumped). Provenance: William Heber; Owen Oliver 1715; John Harrisson, Walney, August 8 1793 (signatures on first blank); further inscriptions, including a note on the reading of the 85th psalm by the Curate of Chelsea 'on the occasion of his Majesty's recovery,' 23 April 1789. Sale: Sotheby's, January 24, 1944, lot 200, to Foyle for £30 (tipped-in catalogue description). Another copy of the same edition, not ruled in red. (P1 torn with partial loss of catch-word, without front blank.) CONTEMPORARY GILT-TOOLED BLACK TURKEY, the sides with a rectangular panel containing a double-lozenge filled with massed small tools, gilt spine, gilt edges gauffered with dots (joints lightly rubbed, corners bumped). Provenance: Francis Gardiner (signature on rear blank); Hickman Baronet (armorial bookplate). This binding has interesting points of similarity with no. 102 in The Henry Davis Gift, II, which occurs on a 1660 Book of Common Prayer and Bible. Wing B-3637A. (2)
