DONNE, John (1573-1631). LXXX Sermons. London: Richard Royston and Richard Marriot, 1640.
2° (337 x 218mm). Engraved frontispiece by M. Merian in later state. Title with woodcut device of Daniel praying and double-ruled border. Text within double-rule, woodcut initials and headpieces. (Frontispiece repaired and extended at lower margin, hole in E2 causing some loss to a few words, small holes in E5, H3 with internal tears, K6 affected by small wax stain, M3 internally torn and with hole affecting text on recto [verso blank], 3K6 with rust hole, light dampstaining towards end, without first and last blanks.) CONTEMPORARY GILT-TOOLED RED TURKEY, sides with outer border and double panels formed by triple gilt fillets, both panels with urn of flowers at corners, gilt spine and turn-ins, marbled pastedowns, gilt edges (joints splitting, scuff marks to both covers, extremities rubbed, small chip to one spine compartment, head and foot of spine frayed). Provenance: List of Donne's works in a contemporary hand on front free endpaper; John Hely-Hutchinson, Chippenham Lodge, Ely (booklabel dated 1947, sold Sotheby's, 13 March 1956, lot 255, £44 to Foyle).
FIRST EDITION. Dedicated to Charles I, this was the first folio collection of Donne's sermons and contains the first printing of his life by Isaak Walton. Copies bound in turkey leather are uncommon. Grolier Wither to Prior 293; Keynes Donne 29; STC 7038.
