SHAKESPEARE, William (1554-1616). Julius Caesar. A tragedy. As it is now acted at the Theatre Royal. London: by H. H. Jun. for Hen. Heringman and R. Bentley, sold by Joseph Knight and Francis Saunders, 1684.
4° (213 x 154mm). (Washed and pressed, without initial blank before title, title slightly soiled, some residual stains, upper margins shaved affecting a few headlines, B2 with repaired tear at lower outer corner, D3 slightly cropped at outer margin, E3 with slight paper fault a lower margin, last leaf with hole affecting numeral recto and verso.) Late 19th-century olive green morocco, gilt borders, spine lettered longitudinally between two raised bands, comb-marbled endpapers, gilt turn-ins and page edges (spine faded to brown, corners a little rubbed).
FIRST SEPARATE EDITION. The cast, on the title verso, includes Betterton as Brutus, and it was the great success of his revival that led to the printing of this and four undated editions before the next dated edition of 1691. North's Plutarch, which had been published in 1579 and reprinted in 1595, provided the source for Julius Caesar which was probably written and first performed in 1599. Arber II, 64; Bartlett 112; Jaggard p. 319 (describing a ghost of 1680 as the first edition and in this edition calling for 62 rather than 60 numbered pages); Wing S-2922.
