(Title soiled, one or two headlines slightly shaved, some short tears at upper margins.) Late 19th-century mottled calf gilt, gilt edges. Provenance: Theophila [?] Obijno (early signature on title). FIRST EDITION of Dryden's celebrated adaptation of Anthony and Cleopatra, first performed in December 1677 at the Theatre Royal. In this copy, the preface had been bound in before the dedication. J. DRYDEN. Troilus and Cressida; or, truth found too late. A tragedy as it is acted at the Dukes Theatre. London: for Abel Swall and Jacob Tonson, 1679. 4° (215 x 159mm). (Title rather soiled, crease-marked and torn in several places with repairs on verso, repairs at lower margin of a1, C4 and to margins of end leaves, soiling to A3r, b3v and elsewhere, G3 onwards rather crease-marked, dampstaining near end.) Provenance: some marginal annotations to the preface in a contemporary hand (cropped by the binder); inscription along outer margin of I2v; 'Mancher September 17 1821' (inscription along outer margin of I3r). Late 19th-century blue morocco gilt, gilt edges. FIRST EDITION. Dryden's preface, containing a long essay on the grounds of criticism in tragedy, is full of allusions to Shakespeare and quotations from Hamlet and Richard II. This adaptation was first performed at Dorset Garden in the spring of 1679 with a prologue 'spoken by Mr. Betteron representing the ghost of Shakespeare'; Betterton took the lead as Troilus and his wife played Andromache. Shakespeare's original text was first printed in 1609. Here, in his dedication to Lord Orrery, Dryden defends his own use of blank verse, and mentions Shakespeare as 'the first, who to shun the pains of continual Rhyming invented that kind of writing ....'
