Engraved title incorporating 9 portraits (including the author) of famous doctors, 3 (of 4) engraved plates of instruments, one folding, woodcut illustration of Mercury and several pages of woodcut symbols, folding printed table. (Lacks frontispiece, here present in facsimile, title repaired at fore-margin and with loss of a few letters of imprint, a few minor stains.) Contemporary English calf, sides panelled in blind (head and foot of spine repaired, slight signs of wear).
Second edition but the first to include all Woodall's works. The author, a contemporary of Harvey, was the surgeon-general to the East India Company and this edition of the Surgeon's Mate was made required reading for all naval surgeons in the Company. He was one of the first doctors to realise the importance of lemons, limes and oranges as a preventative measure against scurvy. STC 25963; Wellcome 6775; cf. Garrison and Morton 2144.
