2° in 4's (1640?-1716). Mezzotint frontispiece portrait by J. Smith after Sir Peter Lely. With a duplicate copy of the same portrait added. Correction slip on p. 438. (Occasional light marginal browning and soiling, without final blank.) Later 19th-century mottled calf by Francis Bedford, gilt-panelled spine with red morocco lettering-pieces, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (upper cover a little scuffed).
LARGE PAPER COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Jackson describes the portrait of Wycherley at the age of 28 as 'one of the most famous of literary mezzotints,' and goes on to comment: 'there is in the luxury of these spacious sheets, when contrasted with their ribald contents, something of the atmosphere of the court of the second Charles.' Grolier Wither to Prior 1085; Pforzheimer 1101; together with Katherine Philips Poems, London: J.M. for H.
