CONTEMPORARY RED MOROCCO TOOLED TO A 'COTTAGE-ROOF' DESIGN, the centre ornament formed by a star within a pointillé circle with a heron, backward-looking phoenix and marguerite radiating from the centre and once repeated, the star and phoenix repeated at angles of the 'cottage-roof,' borders decorated with bees, moths, an urn with flowers, and flower sprays, gilt spine panels with green morocco lettering-piece, spot-marbled endpapers, gilt edges (spine slightly faded). Provenance: Maggs Bros. (tipped-in catalogue description, no. 130).

FIRST EDITION of this charmingly bound book. A second edition appeared in 1774. ESTC records only one copy of the first (BL); together with 11 other volumes, all tooled in gilt, including a Scottish 'herring-bone' and two Scottish 'wheel' bindings. (12)
