FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO A FELLOW BIBLIOPHILE. John Bagford, London shoemaker and 'biblioclast,' is remembered for the collection of broadsides known as the 'Bagford Ballads,' now in the British Library. He was also responsible for an enormous collection of title-pages and other fragments in 64 volumes folio. The many rare volumes he mutilated to build this collection led Dibdin to call him 'the most hungry and rapacious of all book and print collectors.' However, according to Hearne himself, Bagford's knowledge of paper and bindings was exceptional (see DNB I, p. 868).
