A REMARKABLE AND ELABORATE MID-NINETEENTH-CENTURY MOSAIC BINDING, from the library of the socialist leader and book collector, John Burns M.P., who retired from from Parliament in 1918, and received an annuity of $5,000 from the estate of Andrew Carnegie in 1919. As G.D.H. Cole records, 'the rest of Burns's long life was spent mainly in collecting books about old London and the early history of the Labour movement' (DNB 1941-1950, p.124). The ornate decoration of the present binding, and the wording employed on the cruciform onlays on the doublures - 'IT IS FINISHED' - suggest that this copy could have been bound for one of the compilers.
