BROWNING, Robert (1812-1889). Seven autograph letters signed and two incomplete letters to F.B. Doveton, Val d'Aosta (one) and London, 28 September [18]85 - 8 May [18]88, approximately 11 pages, 8vo, autograph envelopes, blanks (2 letters mutilated and lacking respectively the signature and the salutation and opening paragraph), mounted and laid into card, in an album (also including transcripts), early 20th-century blue morocco gilt by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, the upper cover lettered in gilt, gilt borders, spine in six compartments, lettered in one, gilt turn-ins, blue watered silk doublures and liners, gilt edges.
A series of letters to an aspiring poet, finding Doveton's work at first 'suitable enough for the magazines for which you have written them. You must remember that my own performances were never intended to be popular and that I am the worst judge possible of poetry which desires immediate recognition'. Accepting a dedication and copy, Browning offers somewhat qualified praise and 'the advice of a veteran, pay no sort of attention to criticisms good or bad', and a mollifying response to an apparent accusation of hurting Doveton's feelings.
