Cosway-style binding in green morocco gilt by Riviere and Son for Henry Sotheran, lettered in gilt fore-edges of covers 'Cosway binding , invented by J.H. Stonehouse', upper cover with inset original rectangular triple-portrait miniature on ivory of Dickens, his wife and his sister-in-law by Miss C.B. Currie after Daniel Maclise, the miniature surrounded with gilt double-fillet border, the remaining area of the upper cover with a design of dots and stylised scrolling foliage within a thin double-fillet outer border, the lower cover decorated with a thin double-fillet border, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and third, the others with repeat decoration of a leaf spray and dots within a double-fillet border, gilt turn-ins, marbled-paper endleaves, original green paper wrappers to the parts bound in, gilt edges.
AN ORIGINAL 'COSWAY' BINDING SIGNED BY STONEHOUSE AND CURRIE ON STONEHOUSE'S GREEN LEAVES. The 'limitation' leaf reads 'This is No. 918 of the Cosway Bindings invented by J.H. Stonehouse, with miniatures on Ivory by Miss Currie. Signed J.H. Stonehouse Inventor. C.B. Currie Artist'.
