KEATS, John (1795-1821). Endymion: A Poetic Romance. London: by T. Miller for Taylor and Hessey, 1818.
8° (219 x 138mm). Half-title. (Some gatherings a little spotted, without the 2 leaves of advertisements that MacGillivray notes are 'sometimes found at the end' and recorded by Haywood.) Early 20th-century maroon morocco gilt, the covers with borders of 3 gilt fillets joined by floral corner-pieces, gilt board edges, roll-tooled gilt turn-ins, the flat spine gilt in 6 compartments divided by raised bands, titled in 2 compartments and dated at the foot, the other compartments decorated with central gilt floral tools within gilt frames, top edges gilt (offsetting from turn-ins onto endpapers, extremities lightly rubbed, boards slightly warped). Provenance: 'For F.E. Smith from [?]Oliver John J[...]son just before my return to Russia Dec. 1916' (inscription on flyleaf); F.E. Smith, Earl of Birkenhead (1872-1930, armorial bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. A WIDE-MARGINED COPY. Later (?third) issue with cancellans half-title ([A]1) bearing the imprint 'T.Miller, Printer, [...]' on verso, but with the conjugate errata leaf ([A]6, listing 5 corrections) replaced with the first issue erratum leaf bearing one correction.
