8° (241 x 147mm). Half-title, title printed in red and black and with woodcut device. 4 mounted etched plates on india by and after V. Foulquier, woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials. Contemporary red crushed morocco gilt, bound by Chambolle-Duru and finished by Marius Michel, the covers with floral and foliate PV design in light- and dark-green, maroon and cream morocco onlays, borders of light- and dark-green onlaid morocco bands, the spine gilt in 6 compartments divided by raised bands, titled in gilt in 2 compartments with onlaid dark-green morocco frames, the other compartments with light- and dark-green onlaid morocco frames, board edges gilt, turn-ins, green crushed morocco doublures decorated with gilt flower stamps, the petals in alternating cream and maroon morocco onlays, maroon watered silk free endpapers, gilt edges (unobtrusive light damp-spotting affecting doublures, covers and spine). Provenance: Theodore Seligman (2-page autograph letter signed from Jouaust dated 18 February 1881, single 8° leaf loosely inserted; Newton Hall, Cambridge bookplate initialled 'T.S.'); Seligman sale, Sotheby's, 30 April-3 May 1951, lot 667 (description tipped onto front free endpaper, to Foyle).
A HORS DE COMMERCE COPY BOUND FOR THE VIENNA INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF 1873 BY TWO OF THE BEST FRENCH ATELIERS OF THE LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY. The present edition was limited to 342 numbered copies (of which 20 were on Whatman), but, as the letter from Jouaust to Seligman explains: 'L'exemplaire whatman de Paul et Virginie, par la raison qu'il a été envoyé à l'Exposition de Vienne, était un exemplaire de passe, non destiné à la vente'. Jouaust then states that, as Seligman requested, he has noted Seligman's ownership on the limitation leaf (with the inscription 'Exemplaire , De M. Théodore Seligman , D. Jouaust').
