SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe (1792-1822). Posthumous Poems. Edited by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. London: C.H. Reynell for John and Henry L. Hunt, 1824.
8° (209 x 125mm). (Light offsetting on some pages, variable light browning, some leaves with short, skilfully repaired marginal tears, that on the fly-title to 'Julian and Maddalo' deep.) Late 19th-/early 20th-century crushed morocco gilt by Riviere, the covers with triple gilt fillet borders, the spine gilt in 6 compartments, titled in 2, the others elaborately decorated, roll-tooled gilt turn ins, gilt edges.
FIRST EDITION. In her 'Preface', Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley notes that: ' ''Julian and Maddalo,'' ''The Witch of Atlas,'' and most of the Translations, were written some years ago, and, with the exception of ''The Cyclops,'' and the Scenes from the ''Magico Prodigioso,'' may be considered as having recieved the author's ultimate corrections. ''The Triumph of Life'' was his last work, and was left in so unfinished a state, that I arranged it in its present form with great difficulty. All his poems which were scattered in periodical works are collected in this volume, and I have added a reprint of ''Alastor, or the Spirit of Solitude:''-the difficulty with which a copy can be obtained, is the cause of its republication. Many of the Miscellaneous Poems, written on the spur of the occasion, and never retouched, I found among his manuscript books, and have carefully copied (pp.vii-viii). Without the errata leaf 'probably compiled after some copies were in circulation' (Grolier Shelley 79). Grolier Shelley 78-79; Wise Shelley p.70.
