In the first instance the angularity and curious proportions of this unusual tureen recall a prototype in silver, reflecting part of the radical changes in the polite way to entertain society which were pioneered at the French Court of Louis XIV, and encompassed interior design in all manner of ways. A tiny part of this was the invention of new forms in French silver, rapidly adopted and adapted by foreign silversmiths such as the Huguenot circles in London. For the most impressive recent discussion and documentation of these changes, see Christopher Hartop, The Huguenot Legacy, English Silver 1680-1760.
