8° (177 x 113mm). Half-title with crossed sword wood-engraved motif, wood-engraved diagrams and illustrations. PRESENTATION COPY TO HENRI V OF FRANCE. Fawn calf, gilt by Zaehnsdorf, covers with triple fillet ruled borders, spine gilt in six compartments, top edge gilt, original pictorial red cloth covers and spine bound in. Provenance: Comte de Chambord, Henri V of France, Duc de Bordeaux, (presentation inscription from the author 'à Henri Roi de France avec l'hommage respectueux et devoué de L'Auteur'; Maggs Bros Ltd (library label of the Comte de Chambord with Maggs acquisition note).

A VERY FINE PRESENTATION COPY OF BURTON'S RARE WORK ON SWORDMANSHIP. Burton took up fencing while in Boulogne in the early 1850's, and was trained by a M. Constantin, a celebrated swordsman. This interesting work reflects his earlier work on the Bayonet published in 1853, a subject that had fascinated him from his youth. Penzer p.93
