2° (496 x 310mm). Half-title with engraved vignette after Stothard, 36 hand-coloured aquatint plates, many after Douglas, 12 engraved or aquatint illustrations, most printed in bistre. (Discolouration to plate VII, some spotting to plates.) Contemporary straight-grained russia gilt, by L.Staggemeier (with his ticket), gilt edge (neatly rebacked with original spine laid down, recornered. Provenance: J.P.M. (early initialled pencilled note to margin of page 95).
FIRST EDITION, VERY RARE LARGE PAPER COPY WITH THE EARLY AQUATINT PLATES HAND-COLOURED. 'The relics found by Douglas in his excavations and engraved in this work were sold by his widow to Sir Richard Colt Hoare, who in 1829 presented them to the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford' (DNB). Not in Abbey or Tooley; Lowndes I,p.664.
