8° (230 x 150mm). Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece and 36 plates,EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with numerous plates and portraits, some mounted and inlaid to size. Dark blue morocco gilt, by Root & Son, the spine with a dancing couple, playing cards, ballerinas and bottles of champagne stamped in gilt in the compartments, repeated as cornerpieces on the covers, with a boxing scene stamped in gilt in the centre, top edge gilt FIRST EDITION, second issue with footnote at foot of page 9.

Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece and 35 plates by and after Cruikshank, woodcut title vignette and illustrations by J.R. Marshall and Sears after Cruikshank. (Some light browning and offseting, lacking half-title called for by Tooley, frontispiece and some plates cropped affecting imprint.) Early 20th-century crushed maroon morocco gilt by Riviere & Son, triple gilt fillet borders on covers, the spine gilt in 6 compartments, titled in 2 and dated at the foot, the other compartments decorated with bottle, die, card and dancer tools within frames, roll-tooled gilt turn-ins, top edge gilt, others uncut. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, of the work that 'probably gave Dickens a theme he worked up into the Pickwick Papers' (Abbey), with woodcut illustrations on pp.7, 40 and 42. Abbey Life 284; Tooley 197.
