Text 8° inlaid to 4° EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with approximately 508 engraved portraits and 345 views, titles and plates, mast mounted and inlaid to size, and 20 watercolour portraits by Leonard Skeats. 25pp manuscript index of the extra illustrations bound in volume I. Contemporary olive morocco, gilt by Fazakerley of Liverpool, covers and spines ruled in gilt, top edges gilt. Provenance: William Robinson (bookplate); J. Burns (each volume signed and dated July 12th 1920), sale Sotheby's Tuesday, 25th April 1944.

A magnificent and lavish copy of Evelyn's diary, the deluxe 1906 edition limited to 100 copies, this example extra-illustrated by William Robinson, with his pencil notes and manuscript index. The watercolours by Skeats include John Evelyn, Countess of Castlemaine, Duke of Norfolk and Samuel Pepys. The views include 12 by Hollar and numerous others of London and Italy. (6)
