FORBES, James (1749-1819). Oriental Memoirs: selected and abridged from a series of familiar letters written during seventeen years residence in India. London: 1813 [but Bohn, circa 1839].

4 volumes, 4° (303 x 239mm). Half-titles. 122 plates (comprising engraved portrait frontispiece to vol.I, 27 uncoloured aquatint plates after the Daniells, 94 other engraved or lithographic plates, 27 hand-coloured). (Some plates lightly browned or spotted.) Contemporary red morocco gilt, covers with decorative borders, spines in six compartments with raised bands, olive morocco lettering-pieces in the second and third, the others with repeat pattern of an overall design composed from massed small tools, gilt and marbled edges (light scuffing to extremities).

A FINE COPY OF BOHN'S ISSUE OF FORBES. According to Abbey the first printing had 94 plates, but in 1819 on the author's death, the remaindered copies were deposited in a warehouse. Bohn re-issued the work with 27 additional plates around 1839. The binding may well be from Bohn himself who advertised sets that were 'splendidly bound in morocco, broad gold borders, gilt and marbled edges' for 13 guineas. Abbey Travel 436. (4)
