2 volumes in one, 2° (400 x 307mm). Letterpress 'Intoduction' leaf, 2 'Contents' leaves, section titles to parts II-VI, 3 leaves of 'Advertisement'. Engraved title with hand-coloured vignette, lithographed title to vol.II, on India paper, mounted, 36 aquatint plates on thick paper, hand-coloured by J.B. Hogarth, engraved by Reeve, Fielding, Hunt, and others after Grindlay, W. Westall, D. Roberts, C. Stanfield and others. (Title of volume II browned, small tears and light soiling to margins of first plate, occasional light spotting or browning to plates.) 20th-century red morocco gilt, by Sangoorski and Sutcliffe, covers with double fillet border, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and third, the others edged with double fillet, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges.
A FINE COPY BOUND FROM THE SIX ORIGINAL PARTS. Ackermann was responsible for the first two parts, the remaining four being published by Smith Elder. The work is known in three forms, bound from parts, bound as two volumes without part titles, and finally with as a single volume with a single title. Cf. Abbey Travel 442 (in two volumes without the section titles, etc.); Tooley 239 ('Next to Daniell, the most attractive colour plate book on India. One of the few books in which the colourist is mentioned').
