Black letter, suppressed leaves Eee4-Fff4 in vol.I supplied from a copy of the 1598 edition, folding facsimile map in vol.III. (Vol.I: supplied text leaves mounted to size, repair to upper outer corner and margins of title; vol.II: clean tear to inner lower margin of P6, paperfault tear to X5; vol.III: Title cut-down and mounted with a few characters supplied in manuscript facsimile, A2-6 with lower outer corners torn away and neatly repaired with some text supplied in manuscript facsimile, facsimile folding map.) 20th-century brown morocco, covers with decorative borders in blind, spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in gilt in four, gilt edges, by Bagguley of Newcastle-under-Lyme.
SECOND EDITION, second issue of vol.I with 'yeres' reading on cancel title. Most copies lack the account of the Cadiz expedition, which was suppressed (along with the first issue of the title of vol.I) by order of Queen Elizabeth after the disgrace of the Earl of Essex in 1599. The Molyneux-Wright world map (here supplied in later collotype facsimile) was intended as an accompaniment to vol.III but was issued with only a handful of copies and is thus usually lacking (cf.Shirley 221). Church 322; Lowndes II, p.971; Sabin 29596-98; STC 12626a.
