RIEPENHAUSEN, Johann (1788?-1860). Vita di Raeffaelle da Urbino. Rome: 1832.

Oblong 2° (275 x 375mm). Hand-coloured etched title, heightened with gilt, 12 plates, etched in outline, and hand-coloured to resemble original watercolour drawings, each image edged in gilt, manuscript dedication to 'Milord Talbot, Earl di Shrewsbury', 12 leaves manuscript text, all by Riepenhausen. Original vellum, elaborately tooled in gilt, gilt edges (soiled). Provenance: John Talbot, 16th Earl of Shrewsbury (1791-1852, presentation inscription).

A rare work, with fine plates prepared to resemble watercolours. Born in Göttingen, Johann Riepenhausen and his brother Franz were resident in Rome from 1807 and achieved a notable reputation for their history paintings and copies of XVth and XVIth century frescoes. Their influence on the Nazarenes was considerable.
