Details
VIDAL, Emeric Essex (1778-1861). Picturesque illustrations of Buenos Ayres and Monte Video. London: L. Harrison for R. Ackermann, 1820 [watermarked 1818].

Large 4° (357 x 285mm). 24 hand-coloured aquatints by G. Maile, T. Sutherland, G. Bluck, and D. Havell after E.E. Vidal, 4 folding. (Some marginal soiling, affecting image area of about five plates, small repaired tear to lower blank margin of text leaf I1.) 20th-century black morocco gilt, spine in six compartment with raised bands, lettered in the second and third, edges uncut.

FIRST EDITION. There were two formats and four issues of this work: the early watermarks and the positioning of the original stab-marks suggest that the present example was bound from the original parts issue of the work, and a comparison with the Abbey copy makes it clear that this copy is from the smaller of the two formats: 'One of 750 copies published in elephant quarto' (Tooley). English interest in South America flourished after the capture of Buenos Aires by Commodore Sir Home Popham and Colonel Beresford in 1806. These two 'privateers' sent booty back to London with a reported value of £1,100,000. The widespread and substantial interest in South American affairs this aroused was exploited by Ackermann through a number of fine publications, including the present work. Abbey Travel 698; Tooley 495; Palau 363371; Sabin 99460.
