Compare the pair of very similar candlesticks in the Royal Museums of Art and History, Brussels, one of which was illustrated in colour in their 1989/90 Exhibition Catalogue, no.28, pp. 100 and 101; and another pair included in the Museo Nacional de Arte Decorativo, Buenos Aires, 1969 Exhibition, Catalogue, no. 26, pl.IX. See also the pair of candlesticks of identical form but with the sticks primarily decorated in underglaze-blue and white, in the Copeland Collection, illustrated by William R. Sargent, op.cit., no.114, pp.232 and 233, where the author suggests that although the basic form of these candlesticks is derived from European metal prototypes, the addition of the dogs appears to be the invention of the Chinese since no Western examples of this particular form are known.
A similar candlestick was sold Christie's London 23 June 1975, lot 212; and another was sold Sotheby's London 25 May 1971, lot 136.
