An oak panel back armchair, Lancashire/Cheshire late 17th century
the seat with hinging top enclosing a compartment, the triple panel back profusely carved and with shaped top-rail flanked by pointed finials, the upper horizontal panel with interlocking scrolling device below a strapwork type rail and the twin lower panels carved with stylised thistle and tulip or rose, below a guilloche rail, the shaped arms on ring-turned column supports, the seat hinged midway and with lunette front frieze, on block and baluster-turned legs joined by square section stretchers, the back feet re-toed, front stretcher renewed -- 40in. (102cm.) high, 17½in. (44cm.) high to seat, 16in. (40cm.) deep (seat only)
