Although the pug is native to China, these Chinese models were made for export and were based on European models; Käendler modelled and painted versions in the Meissen factory from circa 1734 onwards and at English factories, such as Chelsea, Bow, Derby and Longton Hall, using Kändler's models were made from the 1750s onwards. Very similar Chinese dogs are illustrated by M. Beurdeley, op.cit., fig.81, facing p. 110 for a pair in the Essayan Collection, Lisbon; by David S. Howard, op.cit., pp.274 and 275, no.331 for the pair in the Hodroff Collection; and by David Howard and John Ayers, op.cit., vol.II, pp. 598 and 599, no.623 for the Mottahedeh example. Pairs of similar dogs were sold Sotheby's London, 28 January 1969, lot 103, 10 February 1970, lot 158, and 25 May 1971, lot 133; and a single pug-dog was sold in these Rooms, 6 November 1995, lot 173.
