A MOMOYAMA PERIOD EXPORT LACQUER RECTANGULAR COFFER WITH HINGED COVER
Late 16th Century
With a flat overlapping hinged lid decorated in gold and black hiramakie and inlaid in aogai with a large shaped panel depicting two deer under maple and tachibana trees, the front with two small shaped panels decorated with tachibana and kiri over aogai, the wide drawer similarly decorated with aogai panels, bamboo and aoi, the sides and back with rectangular panels filled with morning glory, tachibana and kiri, all bordered by shippo bands, the interior decorated with vine leaves on a roironuri ground, engraved copper gilt kanagu and lockplates, on four feet, some old wear and damage, hinges later
