Lot Essay

After the lifting of the ban on importation of Western books in 1720, many Japanese artists came to have the opportunities to see the 'exotic' European way of treating sceneries and objects, firstly in the form of book illustrations in etching.

Most prominent of all the artists who were receptive to the Western methods were Shiba Kokan (1747-1818) and Nagata Zenkichi, most commonly known by the art name of Aodo Denzen (1748-1822)
