Lot Essay

There is a Matthews who was made a Captain on 13 September 1793 listed in D. Syrett, Commissioned Sea Officers of the Royal Navy 1450-1815, London, 1994, p. 304. He was with HMS Courageux and also took part in the occupation of Toulon in 1793. He died in 1798, so the portrait must be posthumous.
We are grateful to Iain MacKenzie and Pieter van der Merwe of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, for their help in preparing this catalogue entry.
