Lot Essay

Hearne has been called 'one of the most subtle and accomplished architectural and landscape watercolourists of his generation', see D. Morris, Thomas Hearne and his Landscape, London, 1989, p. 138. His most important work was The Antiquities of Great Britain, which he produced between 1777 and 1781, in conjunction with the engraver William Byrne.
