Payne executed 86 watercolours between 1790 and 1800, depicting views in Devon, often with a maritime theme and showing views in and around Plymouth. The present watercolour depicts labourers loading stone or slate onto a cart, with Stonehouse Bridge in the distance and the town beyond. For a watercolour of the same view, see P. Hunt, Payne's Devon, A Portrait of the County from 1790 to 1830 through the Watercolours of William Payne, Exeter, 1986, p.10, illustrated and for an etching by Payne of the same view see D. Japes, William Payne A Plymouth Experience, Exeter, 1992, pl.93, 'View of the Bridge and Ferry House at Stonehouse'.
