Lot Essay

This watercolour was formerly attributed to Edward Dayes.
From about 1793 Turner and Girtin were employed by Dr. Monro to make copies after other artists' work, in particular watercolours by John Robert Cozens. The diarist Joseph Farington wrote that 'Girtin drew in outlines and Turner washed in the effects'.
