The present watercolour was executed circa 1822-3 in connection with J.F. d'Ostervald's Excursions sur les côtes et dans les ports de France, published in aquatint, 1793-5, a commission resulting from Bonington's modest success at the Paris Salon in 1822. Seven plates after Bonington were included though none of Boulogne. Two watercolours of Boulogne were, however, included in d'Ostervald's sale at the Hôtel de Bullion, Paris, on 22-24 December 1823. There is a version of this composition without the boats and figures which is attributed to Bonington's father, now in the Paul Mellon Collection at Yale. We are grateful to Patrick Noon for his help in preparing this catalogue entry; see also P.
