all signed with initials or in full 'J.F. Herring. Senr.' and dated '1845' and numbered along the upper edge and side, for transfer
pencil and grey wash, two with watermark 'J WHATMAN/1844' and R TURNER/CHAFFORD MILLS' unframed

Lot Essay

Very few drawings by Herring have appeared on the market in the last forty years. The present drawings are part of a set of twelve, commissioned by 'The New Sporting Magazine' and engraved by E. Hacker for the series 'The High Mettled Racer', published in 1846 and 1847.
