Lot Essay

This watercolour is one of only a few painted by Cowen of Turkey. Cowen travelled mainly in Europe and was patronized by the Duke of Devonshire, the Earl of Ellesmere and the Earl of Liverpool. His principal patron for over a period of forty years was the Earl Fitzwilliam. Cowen's studio sale was held at Sotheby's London, 17 and 18 December 1860.
A watercolour by Cowen of the Bay of Naples was sold at Christie's London, 12 April 1994, lot 129 (£2,070).
