Lot Essay

Chinnery executed a number of drawings showing the view of the Praya Grande and the Franciscan convent in 1838. Chinnery left Macau a year later, as did the rest of the British population as a result of the opium crisis.
A drawing of the same view by Chinnery is reproduced in the catalogue for the Hong Kong Museum of Art exhibition, 'George Chinnery His Pupils and Influence, Hong Kong, 1985, p. 132, pl. 13.
