Lot Essay

Early in his career Wallis painted a small group of paintings depicting scenes and incidents with strong literary associations. Of these, it was Chatterton, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1856, which established his reputation.
Wallis travelled in Italy, Egypt and the Middle East and illustrated a number of books on Persian works of art.
