The artists were sisters and both studied under John Varley after the Varley brothers had been invited to their Norfolk home by their mother in 1802. Harriet married Lord Beresford, the second son of the Marquis of Waterford, in 1808. The marriage failed and she returned to live with her sister until Susan's death in 1857.
