A Composite Scottish Basket-Hilted Backsword, And A British Officer's Backsword
The first second quarter of the 18th Century, the second circa 1800
The first with flat tapering blade with two fullers on each side, each extending almost to the blunt point, iron guard of rounded bars involving notched panels pierced with circles and heart-shaped designs (rear quillon missing), compressed pommel in three sections separated by flutes, and shagreen-covered wooden grip spirally bound with an iron band (incomplete); the second with slender tapering blade with broad full length fuller on each side, iron stirrup hilt with two scrolled side-guards enclosing a circular panel pierced and engraved with the badge of the Prince of Wales, faceted back-piece and pommel (loose), and reeded ebony grip (chipped), the iron parts of both swords with some rust patination
