An English 'Mortuary' Backsword
Mid-17th Century
With straight blade (some pitting throughout) double-edged towards the point and stamped within the double fullers 'Clemens Willems In Solingen', iron hilt comprising solid guard chiselled in low relief with scrollwork inhabited by profile heads, portrait medallions of Charles I, and a central mounted figure also representing Charles I, slender bars incised with lines, globular pommel chiselled in low relief with scrolls, and later spirally grooved wooden grip, the iron parts of the hilt now picked out with gold paint
