An Unusual Silver-Mounted Tortoiseshell Powder-Flask
Late 17th Century, probably German
With circular body convex on the front and back, with narrow raised concentric mouldings enclosing a plain band decorated with applied silver rosettes arranged in swags and interspersed with silver pellets, in the middle of the stepped recessed centre a large silver stud in the form of a mulberry, the rim-band engraved with stylized acanthus foliage and chased with a central line of beadwork in relief between roped lines, the engraved two-stage nozzle decorated with further beadwork and with silver suspension-chain at its base (stopper missing)
