A Composite German Rapier
Mid-16th Century
With fine broad double-edged blade with narrow central fuller on each side almost to the point, stamped 'Iohann' and 'Iohanni' respectively, the ricasso struck on each face with a large negro's head mark, iron hilt comprising long straight quillons widening towards the rounded tips, arms, large and small oval side-rings on the outside, and single ring and diagonal guard on the inside, globular pommel, all, except the inner guards, with studded "mulberry" surfaces, and spirally grooved wire-bound wooden grip
