A Fine German Right-Hand Mitten Gauntlet
Circa 1530, probably Augsburg
Of bright steel, boxed over the back of the hand and the outer side of the cuff, the latter embossed over the ulna and comprising main and inner plates hinged together and secured with a strap and buckle (both replaced), the rear edges with plain turn and recessed border, the hand of three articulated metacarpal plates each with "Cupid's bow" shaped central cusping, and extending over the base of the thumb, finger defence of four articulated plates, including a knuckle-plate, embossed and shaped to the outline of the fingers and nails, and separate thumb-defence of three plates (releathered throughout)
