An early printed sea chart of Novaya Zemlya, the island first reached by the european Richard Chancellor in 1554, during his quest for the North East Passage. Willem Barents' party became the first Europeans to survive an arctic winter when they were marooned on the island in 1596. Sir Robert Dudley's atlas Arcano del Mare was the first sea atlas published by an Englishman.
