Details
EDWARD ADRIAN WILSON (1872-1912)
The South Polar Times.
signed and inscribed 'E.A. Wilson The South Polar Times 1902-3. "Discovery"'
watercolour
9½ x 7½in. (24 x 19cm.)
A preliminary(?) version of the design (with variations) from the first issue of South Polar Times, April 1902, published as a frontispiece to vol.II of the facsimile edition. Dr. Edward Wilson accompanied Robert Falcon Scott on the British National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-4 as doctor, naturalist and artist and would accompany Scott and Shackleton on the southern sledging journey of 1902-3 to Scott's Furthest South. For Wilson's Discovery expedition drawings, see A. Savours (ed.), Edward Wilson, Diary of the Discovery Expedition, London, 1966.
The threat of boredom during the enforced inactivity in the dark winter months of 1902-3 was relieved by the production of the monthly manuscript periodical The South Polar Times edited by E.H.Shackleton, with articles, stories, poems and drawings supplied by various members of the party. A facsimile was published, in 3 volumes, between 1907 and 1914.
