Portrait of Henry, 3rd Viscount Maynard (1786-1865), full-length, in a hunting coat, holding a crop and a bugle with hounds at his side, huntsmen in a landscape beyond

The sitter was the only son of the Rev. Henry Maynard, Rector of Radwinter, Essex, and his wife Susan, daughter of the Rev. Francis Barnard, Rector of Caxton, Cambridge. He married Mary, daughter of Reginald Rabbett of Bramfield Hall, Suffolk, at St. Georges, Hanover Square, on 27 December 1810. In 1824 he succeeded to the title of his uncle, Charles, 2nd Viscount Maynard, and from 1825 until his death was Lord Lieutenant and Vice-Admiral of Essex. His only son, Colonel the Hon. Charles Maynard (1814-1865), who predeceased him by four months, married first Frances, daughter of James, Lord Glenlyon, and sister of George, 6th Duke of Atholl, in 1840, and secondly Blanche, second daughter of Henry Fitzroy of Salcey Lawn, Northamptonshire, in 1860. This portrait, together with all the family estates, descended to Frances, Colonel the Hon. Charles Maynard's eldest daughter by his second wife, who married Francis, 5th Earl of Warwick in 1881. It then passed to her eldest surviving son the Hon. Maynard Greville. Beechey also painted a three-quarter-length portrait of Charles, 2nd Viscount Maynard, for which a payment of £52.10 is recorded on 28 August 1811 (see W. Roberts, Sir William Beechey, R.A., London, 1907, pp. 132 and 234).
