Lot Essay

After training and working in Edinburgh, in 1773 More settled in Rome where he remained until his death. He earned a considerable reputation in Italy and Reynolds is said to have remarked that 'he was the best painter of air since Claude'. A View of the Campagna and A View of Tivoli were sold by Christie's at Mere Hall, Cheshire, on 23 May 1994 (lots 239 and 240, sold £40,000 and £35,000 respectively).
