Lot Essay

Farington worked largely in pencil and watercolour and less frequently in oil. He was a pupil of Richard Wilson, R.A., whose work he profoundly admired, and who greatly influenced his early style. Much sought after for his topographical views, Farington also exhibited The bridge at Bridgnorth at the Royal Academy (1792, no. 68), and a more extensive view than the present picture was engraved by W. Byrne and T. Medland, and published on 1 January 1791.
