Lot Essay

The East Indiaman Ceres sailed on her first voyage, to India and China, from Portsmouth on 5 April 1788. She returned to Portsmouth at the end of her third and last voyage on 10 September 1794. The present picture is a charateristic early work by Luny, and still bears the strong influence of Francis Holman, his master.
